Earlier this month a group of health professionals from Eastern Health in Victoria, Australia spent a week in the NHS visiting sites and meeting people who work in and use the health system. The Health Innovation Network hosted their visit to London, along with the Point of Care Foundation and provided a range of site visits culminating in a workshop to explore learning.

We found their observations of the NHS in England fascinating and revealing and share some of the themes here.

How can Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs) influence GPs to spread innovation?

As independent contractors, GPs cannot be instructed to take up innovation. They will adopt innovations that they can see will benefit their patients and also their practices in terms of finance or efficiency. They can be given financial incentives, but there is a limit to the funds available and Quality Outcome Frameworks (QOFs) have historically been used to ensure that current good practice is as universal as possible.
